Steve began his professional life as a dentist and operated a very successful practice in Boise, Idaho. Steve always loved development, so he began developing medical office buildings with Gary Hawkins, a long time friend. Steve also developed several successful residential projects. Seventeen years ago, Steve sold his dental practice to focus on real estate development full-time. Steve Smith’s entry into the commercial real estate world was inaugurated with the development of Franklin Towne Plaza, now the second largest retail center in Boise. Franklin Towne Plaza was assembled from over 70 residential lots and homes that had to be individually acquired and the parcels rejoined. This amazing project launched Hawkins-Smith into it’s specialty: Power Centers!

After graduating from Brigham Young University, Gary began his career in real estate in Salt Lake City, primarily i the brokerage field. During this time, he worked on-site locations for companies such as Smith’s Food and Drug, Safeway, Albertson’s, and 7-Eleven stores. In 1976, Gary decided to relocate to his hometown of Boise to start Hawkins & Associates, which included both real estate development and commercial real estate brokerage.

Gary has taught seminars on commercial investment and real estate development for the National Association of Realtors (CCIM) throughout the Unites States for over 20 years. He has also been a guest speaker at many International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) conventions. In addition, Gary has served on the Board of Directors for a Real Estate Investment Trust.
